Step-by-Step Guide: How to Convert an Image to Vector in Illustrator

Step 1: Import Your Image

Begin by opening Adobe Illustrator. Create a new document and adjust the dimensions according to your image needs. Go to File > Place to insert your image onto the artboard, resizing it as needed.

Step 3: Enable Preview Mode

Click on your image to activate the Image Trace panel. Make sure to check the Preview box so you can see real-time changes as you work with the tool.

Step 4: Experiment with Preset Options

Illustrator provides several presets that can simplify the process of vectorizing your image. These include:

  • High-Fidelity Photo: Replicates the original image with great detail.
  • Low-Fidelity Photo: Simplifies the image while retaining its essence.
  • 6 Colors / 16 Colors: Reduces the number of colors for a stylized appearance.
  • Shades of Gray / Grayscale: Converts the image to varying gray tones.
  • Black and White: Creates a bold, two-tone image perfect for logos or icons.
  • Outline: Converts the image into black outlines, ideal for sketch-like effects.

Step 5: Fine-Tune the Settings

Now it’s time to manually adjust the settings for your image:

  • Mode: Choose between Color, Grayscale, or Black and White based on your design.
  • Threshold: In Black and White mode, this setting determines how Illustrator splits the image into black and white pixels.
  • Paths: Adjusts how closely the vector follows the original image’s contours.
  • Corners: Controls the sharpness of the vector’s corners.
  • Noise: Specifies the level of detail by filtering out smaller, unwanted areas of the image.

In the Advanced section, you can use the Simplify slider to control how complex the vector paths are.

Step 6: Execute the Trace

Once satisfied with your adjustments, uncheck the Preview box and click the Trace button to vectorize the image.

Step 7: Expand the Traced Image

Go to Object > Expand and confirm the settings. Your image will now consist of editable vector paths.

Step 9: Save and Export Your Vector

Save your file in Illustrator format (.ai) via File > Save, or export it as an SVG file through File > Save As to make it compatible with other software.

Benefits of Vectorizing Your Sketches

Vectorizing your images comes with several creative advantages, including:

  • Infinite Scalability: You can resize your vector graphic to any dimension without sacrificing quality.
  • Ease of Editing: You can adjust individual elements within the vector file, providing more flexibility for future modifications.
  • Versatility: Vectors are ideal for a wide range of applications, from digital media to print.
